To the Moon! Most people don't know that HB played a huge role in the space race. The Douglas Aircraft Space Systems Center (now Boeing) built the upper stage of the Saturn V rocket right here, which launched Apollo astronauts to the moon.
"Tin Can Beach": Bolsa Chica State Beach used to have a much less glamorous nickname: Tin Can Beach. In the '40s and '50s, it was a wild spot for "free spirits" and was famously littered with enough tin cans to earn the moniker before the state cleaned it up in 1961.
A "High" School Tradition: The Huntington Beach High School sports teams are still called the Oilers, a lasting nod to the city’s industrial roots.
